Considering this, the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), which operates under the Government of India, is providing free legal aid to the economically backward.

What is free legal aid?
If you are facing a case against someone or you are in a situation where you need to file a case. If you cannot afford to pay for a lawyer, NALSA will appoint a lawyer for you free of charge.

Who can apply?
Only the following persons are eligible for this service under the Legal Services Authority Act (Section 12):
- SC/ST community
- Women and children
- Mentally challenged and differently abled
- Persons subjected to human trafficking or forced labour
- Victims of natural calamities or violence
- Labourers
- Persons affected by certain laws
- Low income (within the limit prescribed by the government)

How to apply online?
Follow these simple steps to apply online: You can easily apply for free legal aid through the NALSA website. Go to the NALSA official website and select “New Application”.
Documents Required for Free Legal Aid India Application
- Legal Aid Details: Select your Nationality / State / District / Taluka and enter your State, District, Taluka details.
- Problem Details: Briefly describe your problem.
- Personal Details: Enter your name, gender, phone number, occupation, qualification category and your photograph.
- Opposite Party Details: Enter the name and address of the person you are suing.
- Case Details: If there is an existing case, please provide its details.
- Documents: Your Aadhaar card and other certificates (all of these should be within 10MB). Fill in all the above and submit.
What happens after applying?
Your application will be reviewed by the authorities and you will be informed about the next steps. A suitable lawyer will be assigned to you and your case will be followed up.
